You very well may be right - but how many other secondary character's pets are mentioned at all in the books? The pet's I remember are Harry's, Ron's, Hermione's . . . and Neville's.

I think Trevor's just a toad... and he might live longer than a regular toad cause he's magical toad. Just like it happens with regular rats and magical rats

It's a shame Peeves isn't used in the movies. When they make the fifth one, Peeves won't be able to make Umbridges life miserable.

Truthfully, I don't think that Neville's toad is going to become important. I just think Trevor is a symbol of Neville's clumsyness. (Warning: Everything I predict seems to come out false in the books)
