Neither can live while the other survives

The prophecy has never made much sense. If the prophecy was literally true, they couldn't be alive at the same time. I think the "live" here is less literal. I think live here refers to each of them really living their lives. Voldemort cannot truly live his life while Harry is around becasue he is a constant nuisance if not an outright threat. Harry cannot truly live his life for the very same reason. Before either one of them can truly live, they have to be free from the other.

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies... And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not... And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies..."

I know what it means -- or, at least, I know JKR wants us to believe it means. It seems simple and straight-forward to me. But you know she's going to give it a twist somehow.

Still, one must die at the hand of the other. Or not.

One thing is for sure: I need a white russian.

My point is, this line cannot be straightforward and literal:
"And either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives."

If taken literally it means that they can't both be alive at the same time. Obviously this isn't the case because they are.

Aberforth makes a very good point here, not that u often dont or anything, the line must be meant in the sense that 'live' refers to pursuing a life of freedom from the other
