Hmmm, not sure. I'm not saying Snape was ever exactly evil but I think he was really bitter (from his childhood) and was angry with pretty much everyone when he was younger. I think he hated James and because Harry is so much like him, he has never seen a good side of Harry (just the negative). I do agree that a lot of his actions towards Harry are to distance himself from him to protect both himself and Harry but I don't think he is Harry's biggest fan.

I really like the idea of what you're saying but I do think it's a definate possibility that Dumbledore helped turn Snape around.
