Slughorn In Hiding

Why would Slughorn have been hiding for a year when Dumbledore and Harry visit him re returning to Hogwarts? Anyone with any clues? I mean, it's evident that he knew a few Deatheaters and Voldemort from when he taught them 50 years before... but why would that be a reason to go into hiding?

I think it's because Slughorn knew that Voldemort would seek him out to be on his side, and that's not what Slughorn wanted.
He had already helped Voldemort before, and he felt horrible about that.

Maybe Voldemort wouldnt want the holder of such crucial information as the horcruxes to be living. Maybe voldemort wants slughorn to join or be relieved of his life.

I wouldn't blame Slughorn if that's the case. I mean, help me take over the wizarding world or die. I wouldn't want to make that decision.

He not only knew about horcruxes, he also knew that Riddle had specifically asked about them.

Whatever else he might be, Slughorn was intelligent enough to read the signs and to be afraid.

I think this is it more than anything. He'd gone to significant trouble to alter his memory so that no one else would know. Whether or not Voldemort even cared about Slughorn, we don't know. BUT Slughorn THOUGHT Voldemort cared.
