Yeah it was his destiny. In all the time travel stories if someone tried to go back in time to stop someone dying it always happened in the end anyway because it was meant to. Like in The Time Machine, the whole reason the guy built it was to save his girlfriend but he couldn't. And there was another example in an episode of Charmed when Paige tried to save her foster parents by changing the circumstances but they still died too.
