I forget who asked and where.
This is the only place I remember it being mentioned.

HP-3, Chapter 22, Owl Post Again (last chapter) page 425

“Didn't make any difference?” said Dumbledore quietly. “It made all the difference in the world, Harry. You helped uncover the truth. You saved an innocent man from a terrible fate.”
(Recall Trelawney's prediction...)

“But – I stopped Sirius and Professor Lupin from killing Pettigrew! That makes it my fault if Voldemort comes back!”

“It does not,” said Dumbledore quietly. “Hasn't your experience with the Time-Turner taught you anything, Harry? The consequences of our actions are always so complicated, so diverse, that predicting the future is a very difficult business indeed... Professor Trelawney, bless her, is living proof of that... You did a very noble thing, in saving Petigrew's life.”

“But if he helps Voldemort back to power – !”

“Pettigrew owes his life to you. You have sent Voldemort a deputy who is in your debt... When one wizard saves another wizard's life,it creates a certain bond between them... and I'm much mistaken if Voldemort wants his servant in the debt of Harry Potter.”

“I don't want a connection with Pettigrew!” said Harry. “He betrayed my Parents!”

“This is magic at its deepest, its most impenetrable, Harry. But trust me.. the time may come when you will be vary glad you saved Pettigrew's life.”

The relationship between Petigrew and Harry is yet to be explored and holds heaps of interesting possibilities I reckon.
If the creation of a wizards' life debt only takes helping people out of a potentially deadly situation, wouldn't that mean that everyone in the world owes Hary a life debt?? Therefore, we have to assume that a specific protective act by one wizard to another will create a debt. This means that Petigrew owes Harry and that Snape owed/s James (saving Snape from going into the jaws of a werewolf-Siirius).
Does Voldemort owe Harry a life debt because he used Harry's blood to reserect himself??
What will that mean when Voldemort comes to try to kill him??? Can he?????

I don't know that linear logic will help you with this kind of magic.
I think it's fuzzier than all that.

Oh you are being WAY too logical psycoducky. Come and play :P !

Petigrew has been hanging out in the wings for way too long I reckon, time to bring the little, silver armed fella into the lime-light. He is the key to this wizard life debt thingo that we've been told a tantalising amount about. If the 'debt' shinnanigans does come back into it, will it be Petigrew (as Dumby implies) or Voldy or someone else that will make it relevant??? How???

ps. I don't think Iv'e ever told you this psyducky but I love the way you quote

You quote thoroughly which is brillant. I like a bit of canon to hang my great leaping theories and bizarre tangents on. Talking of which:

What do you think about the idea of Voldy owing Harry a debt? Does this explain Dumby's 'gleam of victory'???
What form does a debt take do you think?? Does it mean that you can't kill the owee?? Kinda like a brother wand thing; the killing curse just won't happen properly on someone you owe a debt to???

I thought the above was why I was 'getting carried away with it"???

We know debt's exist. We know that they 'create a certain bond between' wizards.... what??
If stopping a wizard being killed (a la Harry and Petigrew) can create a "bond", how about enabling a wizard to be reborn (Harry and Voldy)???
What will this mean??

It was "the blood of an enemy, forcibly taken."
Harry didn't have a choice.

Wow, this topic is like a car on a sheet of ice - swerve left... veer right... aaaaah!

Pettigrew's debt to Harry is because - and only because - Harry had the power to let him live or die, and Harry chose to let him live.

Voldemort owes nothing to Harry by means of a life-debt. Voldemort never gave Harry the choice to live or die. Never.

replies welcome
