Yes, it is absolutely, expressly stated. (1) Lily died for Harry; (2) Aunt Petunia allowed Harry house room and (3) Dumbledore cast some ancient piece of magic that tied it all together.
But that's a good question -- do all three parts end at age seventeen, or is it just Petunia's part and Dumbledore's connection?

It needs to be a big, dramatic, bold, bombshell, revelation. An 'Aha! Now everything makes sense!' reason for Dumbledore having the gleam in his eye... [/b]

You're absolutely right.

...The trouble is, I can't see any evidence for anything other then what's already been suggested. And Psyduck, with this gleam of triumph, I don't think we'll be able to figure it out. This is another of those Groucho Marx topics. [/b]

You're absolutely wrong. The fact that we haven't seen it is not proof that it isn't there. I missed plenty of things the first time through, and needed someone to point them out to me.
For example, the connection between the dementors and a human horcrux. It's an "aha!" thing once you see it. So clear and simple. But it's not obvious at first.
We might or we might not figure out that gleam of triumph. It's a big planet, and we've got a bunch of intelligent people wondering about it.
