I think the Filch as R.A.B. theory works brilliantly!

Filch is merely the name everyone knows him by, and he was born to a wizarding family (Bones?) without any magical abilities himself, thus being a SQUIB.

We've received a clue that someone will use magic late in life for the first time...Filch? I think so...

Surely Tom Riddle was very proud of his questionable accomplishments while still at Hogwarts, he even showed off that Ring (<---Horcrux) while at Hogwarts. Filch sees everything that goes on a Hogwarts and likely discovered what young Voldy was up to.

Tom was obvoiusly becoming a force to be reckoned with and old Filchy wanted to one-up this "Dark Lord." Filch most likely grew up in the world of Grindelwald and knew what it was like to live in fear of a dark wizard. Filch knew where it (the locket) was, knew he could take it, knew he could prove that even a squib can outwit a dark wizard if given the right knowledge...left his initials to prove he had done it.

Plus the note said that he would likely be dead soon. That potion really took its toll on Filch, and it shows, but it didn't kill him. Just because Regulus Black is dead doesn't mean R.A.B. is dead as well.

Knowing that he outwitted the latest and greatest dark wizard is probably the only thing that keeps his heart beating, biding his time to see the demise of Lord Voldemort, and to take credit for weakening him.

It just makes sense...sort of.

Ah yeah. Ok there are definate holes in my theory but maybe the Unbreakable only stated that the DE's had to hide and protect the objects and then never speak of them again (or something along those lines). Maybe LV didn't actually include in the Unbreakable anything about the DE's not retrieving the objects in case he needed them to retrieve them later. Not sure why he didn't include giving them away in the Vow though. Maybe it just didn't occur to him that they would dare. Any thoughts?

Maybe old Lucious got nervous with all those security sweeps in his house that he ditched the book to "keep up appearances" with the Ministry of Magic.

Plus, sending the book with a Weasley may have gotten the young Voldy closer to HP and taken him out...thus making Lucious number one in Voldemort's eyes.

Not a very good plan.

True. Maybe he didn't think it through properly and just acted quickly to rid him of any association with Voldemort. And as he considered Volemort dead (he wasn't told about the horcruxes), he didn't think he would ever have to worry about the object again. Still can't think why LV wouldn't include not giving the horcruxes away in his Vow tho???

Maybe ol' Voldy didn't think that his most loyal followers would have the audacity to give away the thing they are held accountable for hiding.
Or maybe Voldemort didn't want to lead on to what the objects actually were so he didn't give them enough information to figure it out...he just said, "Hide this or you will die a painful death."

Yeah, that's what I thought would be most likely. Must trust them 100% then?

(If this theory pans out...) I don't think Voldemort had counted on any of the death eaters to step out of line or to not follow orders to the last detail...seeing as Voldy thinks he is all-powerful.

I just finished HBP for the third time and I love these RAB theories. We know there are plenty of clues in this last book : lots of poyjuice potion going around also. I like the Filch theory, though the necessary facts for this association aren't all there.

I think U have a very good idea about how easily we could overlook this R.A.B. character, and Filch comes 2 mind, as being that very unlikely person. But I just don\'t think it is FILCH. Even if he changed his last name and everything, how in the world could he get into the cave and summon the boat if he has no magical powers???

I think youre right... i understand the Filch theory.. but i think its soo far-fetched that its hard to believe...

but heres another thought im just going to throw out there (even if you dont like it)... everyone takes the letters as RAB maybe its BAR... maybe they put their initials backwards... so who knows... what im really here to say is something COMPLETELY different... so here goes... but i was reading (for the third time) OotP about three months ago... and realize that in grimauld place... there was an old locket that no one could open that they found when they were in the process of cleaning... im thinking that is the locket horcrux missing from the cave... i mean raB... B=Black... and its in the black house... i think it got to have SOMETHING to do with it... i mean JK Rowling is soooo creative... it would be just like her to slip something slight and innoticeable into her books to give us some type of clue... so yeah... thats my theory...
