Wait, wait. Death doesn't always have to have a point. Even in books. Sometimes the only point death makes is the hurt in people if they knew the person that died. JK might not have had any point added to Dumbledore's death.

I'm feeling a little impassioned about this discussion I gotta say. I find it quite insulting that people should think that Dumbledore would allow Bill and his family to suffer because of... what.. some plan, that Dumbledore would think that he is SO necessary to the future that he has to drag everyone he loves through hell and that Dumbledore wouldn't be willing to sacrifice himself to save others/Harry. Dumbledore's rants when he was taking the poison told us the depth of fear that Dumby felt at not being allowed to shoulder the pain for others, his desire to die so others can live, the idea that he would ... 'play' with them and that ideal , is ... so wrong! If HP is about anything it's about struggle against bad, defending the good and the choices and sacrifices that are needed to do both. To deny Dumbledore his sacrifice is mean. Dumbledore's death isn't about tricks or pain, it's a sacrifice for good, given in trust and in love.

Everyone knows that Bill's going to be fine.....unless there's something wrong with craving steak all the time...*shifts eyes*....I better leave then....*runs through the exit* *runs back, breathing heavily* Oh, and if Dumbledore really did die, maybe he had a reason and it wasn't that pointless to him. *runs back through the exit as fast as can go*

K. So I've read over these responses and I reckon there's one point (at least) that we TOTALLy disagree on and that's that Dumby is essential, even necessary. He isn't. It's Harry's story! No-one else but Harry and Voldy need or have to be there in the end. I think that Jo has made it clear that to 'talk the brave talk' when you know that there's someone out there who might jump in and fight your battles for you, is a different kinda bravery than when you truly 'walk the walk': when there's no-one else but you against your foe and you go in fighting.
