I, personally, have always thought there was something shifty about Ollivander. I mean, I sort of got that vibe from the books, but when I saw the first movie, it was like a ton of bricks.
Maybe deep down he's a dark wizard on Voldemort's side? Maybe he isn't hiding and wasn't kidnapped, but went to him by his own volition?

The Fortescue one is a good question. I mean, all that we're told in book 3 apart from his giving Harry free Sundaes every half-hour is that he knew a lot about Medieval Witch burnings and this helped Harry with his homework (imagine it, having homework in the Summer Holidays, reckon I would have gone in strike if my teachers did it to me).

Then again, didn't they also kidnap the guy who ran the icecream palour?
Maybe the Voldy wants revenge not only served cold but also with a dollop of chocolate chip on the side. Maybe Olivander and Mr Whippy have run off together for a bit of private wand duelling-if you know what I mean *wink wink* heehee. [/b]
Very clever.

That is an interesting idea. The whole "great, terrible, but great" thing could be a hint, or anothe red herring. But this is still a very interesting idea and a definite possibility.

The movies twist everything. Don't go by that. I never got that shifty feeling from Ollivander.
We know that he was NOT working for Voldemort at the time Harry bought his wand. He would not have given Harry that useful information about his wand's brother, but would have given it to Voldemort.
Five years later, I still don't believe that he would turn bad.

Plus Olivander reckoned in book one that Voldemort did great things, terrible things, but great. Why would he add in the terrible clarification if he were on Voldemort's side? I mean, we've never seen Malfoy or people of his ilk do it. They would just say that Voldemort was doing the right thing in his quest for power and to purge the wizard world of non-pure bloods.

I'm just being the devil's advocate here, but Olivander seems to be a very intelligent man. If he were on Voldemort's side, I doubt he would be obvious about it.

Failing to mention the wand's brother would not be obvious. If he didn't tell, no one would have known.
