That's the problem for Voldemort - he didn't hear all of the prophecy. If he had he would might realized that in killing Harry's parents he was marking Harry as his equal. As Dumbledore said to Harry in the chapter on Horcruxes, Voldemort doesn't realize that he not only marked Harry as his equal, but that he also gave Harry the necessary stuff to be that.
