HI im new here and just thought i would distribute a bit of a theory on why dumbledore trusts snape. Just a thought that has been running through my mind........ why did Dumbledore trust Snape...........?????????// Maybe........ as noted in the HBP snape was an accomplished potion maker and studied well in lessons with slughorn... So however was Lily James. They would have been in the same class together. Is it not a possibility that snape liked lily and when she chose his arch enemy James Potter it explains snapes massively increased hatred of him. Maybe Dumbledore knew of snapes feelings for lily and therefore knew he would never allow her to be killed , so Dumbledore believed that he was genuinely sorry when Voldemort used the prophecy to attack lily and her family!!!!!!!!!!!!!............as Snape knew nothingof the Dark Lords plan when he recieved the info....... This I think is the secret between S & D and the basis of his long lasting trust in him!!!! Whadddya think...???????????? please shoot me down in flames if needs be.... :P

Hi Black Hand: No I think Dumbledore trusted Snape because of something important such as Snape giving him one of Voldemort's Horcruxes OR giving Lily some potion to protect her baby from Voldemort OR taking an unbreakable vow to protect Harry from death, even at the cost of Snape's own life. Dumbledore trusted Snape because something HUGE and UNQUESTIONABLE passed between them. But what?

I always hated that theory because it's just plain stupid. The idea of carrying a torch for that long is a fairy tale. In real life, it would be beyond pathetic. Real people don't do it unless they're very, very sick. Healthy people eventually move on. Someone that sick can not be trusted. That whole part of the story still creeps me out.

He didn't waste his life away. He had other women, but they never meant as much. please bear in mind - harry potter IS fiction. But, even in the real world you hear stories of people reuniting after many years pre and post war.... they are beautiful stories or love enduring, even though you get through the day to day.... sometimes there are people who you just have more of a spark with than others. the one that you never forget...

Severus/Lily I am comfortable with because I can see it from the Marauder-era timeline, in which it makes a great deal more sense than when viewed from Harry's perspective. In addition, I felt this pairing, even one-sided, was alluded to throughout the series- here is proof. Decently accurate prediction from 2005, and that certainly wasn't the earliest the idea was out there. Yes, in real life it may be unrealistic, but then who of the major characters, especially Dumbledore, Harry, Tom, could really be considered realistic? If JKR had tried to pin a 20 year love on any other character, it would have "creepy" and "patchetic" but really, that love, however obsesssive, is part of Severus' character. Heis...ah, who is it again....? Oh, Heathcliff, from Wutherinng Heights by Emily Bronte. Severus is the HP version of Heathcliff as far as love goes, although I would say he is, at least, less violent.

Who had other women? I thought we were talking about Snape. I can see healthy people finding each other again after decades. But they still would have had a real life in-between. You don't sit around pining over someone you have no hope of seeing again. That's not really love and it's not even flattering. It's just creepy. We also hear love songs with the I-could-never-love-anyone-else theme. And that feeling is real. For the moment. Give it a few months and you're singing a different tune. Someone who's had a good marriage, and the spouse dies while s/he is still young enough, will probably get married again. The people who don't are usually the people who have known only bad relationships.
