Dumbledore said it, over and over in that part about why Lily's death gave a
magical protection. James didn't have a choice because Voldemort was going
to kill him anyway, but Lily could have walked away.

I don't remember whether Dumbledore said why.

Trelawney said Harry's parentS (plural) had thrice defied Voldemort.

Maybe James was just more annoying about it than Lily.
