Dont forget about the Unbreakale Vow - that absolutely played a part in why it was now that Snape chose to do what he did! If he did not go through with it his life, Draco's, Narcissa's and Lucius' lives would have been in danger. He's Slytherin, he's a Death Eater, that would have come before anything else. "Those cunning folks use any means to achieve their ends"

Hi everyone, I'm new - please bear with me if I goof something up but I just have to talk about this book! This section of the story is again full of red herrings - with JKR writing, how can you tell what's real and what's not? It was real that Malfoy was up to something yet no one believed Harry - or so we thought. Dumbledore did believe Harry, yet chose to pretend he didn't. We didn't know until the end of the book that Dumbledore knew all along what was going on, and I think that he knew because Snape kept him informed. There are plenty of other red herrings in this part of the story but the biggest is, IMHO, Dumbledore's death. Yes, Snape took the Unbreakable Vow, and yes, he did follow through with the UV (sneakily, I admit -- taking this vow gave Snape the chance to openily watch Malfoy, the one thing he really wanted to do all along), but never forgot what Snape told the potions class in their 1st year: "I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses, brew glory, bottle fame and even put a stopper in death." Even put a stopper in death, huh? My, my. It's not beyond the realm of reasoning to think that Dumbledore took Harry on the mission in order to get Harry out of Hogwarts so Malfoy could begin his invasion of hogwarts with Death Eaters. Harry would be out of the way and unable to stop it -- does anyone really believe that Dumbledore has never known exactly what Harry is up to, or that Harry wouldn't have been in the battle with the Death Eaters right at the beginning if he were in Hogwarts? I think Dumbledore is more than Harry's teacher: he's the guiding hand behind the prophecy. It's being fulfilled because Harry is doing what Dumbledore wants Harry to do. My proof is simple: Dumbledore has always been there, seemingly a step behind Harry and yet owning up every time to knowing what was happening, and always, always has a hand in guiding Harry down a certain path. As for the 'fake' death, well, Dumbledore could be dead, but I think that, in order to outsmart Voldemort, all stoppers have to be pulled out -- all but the one Snape has in order to make it appear Dumbledore is dead. With Dumbledore dead at Snape's hand, Voldemort will believe he can now go after Harry full force, while all the while Dumbledore can be aiding Harry wiht no one knwoing. I mourn the loss of Dumbledore, but don't believe it. IMHO, he is one more phoenix that will rise from the ashes!

Beautifully put everyone. Welcome on board alpha!!(I love that 'board' pun cracks me up every time!)Dumby just didn't feel right at the end. The whole "You MUST find out Slughorn's memory" thingy was... too much and too unDumby for me. I love your pheonix analogy alpha!! What about Fawkes?? Did he leave or has he been called away by... ohh, I dunno... Dumb??? I'm with you all, I don't like the explanation about Dumb's hand. Something else going on there for sure. Reggie Black is dead now but they've told us that he was p..ed off with the Death Eaters AND that he was killed by Voldemort HIMSELF. WHY??? Maybe because he stole, the Horcrux???? That wold make him RAB. Whattya think?????

early on, when Harry and Dumbledore set on their quest, things felt hinky to me. I can't put my finger on it now, I'll have to go back and reread, but something felt wrong, not genuine about Dumbledore. Sometimes he felt right and sometimes he felt wrong. Actually big sections of the book just felt wrong. I really need to reexamine it. Dumbledore could really be dead though, having prepared Harry for his destination as much as possible and it is up to Harry to complete his destiny.

I agree there is something going on here that is hidden. I think Snape had to be the one to perform the spell that killed D. I think Harry was picking up on something whenhe thought by getting Snape and reaching D. everything would be o.k. I think that white tomb is a lot like the grave of Elvis. Lets open it up and know for sure.

I like the idea of Petigrew on polyjuice was Dumb and therefore Snape didn't have a problem killing him... OK OK I know, he'd have had to swig the potion every hour.... makes the theory a little shakey btu not def. out. What's this Inferi thing about?? We meet inferus in the water... are they zombies or , didn't Dumb say something about them being like puppets??? Was Dumb made into an Inferus. The burnt hand could be where he had actually been killed???

wow i never realized all the teorys i would get wen i posted this topic i really am thinking about all these possiblities i do agree wit the hand coverup i never thought of that i truley hope that u are all correct in ur thinking but there is one thing that troubles me dumbys office it knew he was dead his pic turned up mins after he was dead in book five it sealed its self against anyone who wasnt dumby or wasnt sent by dumby could an imposter really fool his office harry and everyone else im not sure it could and the book did not say that regulus was killed dirctly by voldy it daid he was killed on voldy orders he was never important enough to be killed by voldy himself sirius says that in book five wen he and harry are looking at the tapestry i appritiate all the teorys and keep them coming they are interesting to read

Whjat Sirius says is that reggie was "Murdered by Voldemort. Or on his orders.." We don't know for sure. If Dumb was dead and being manipulated as an Inferus, wouldn't he still 'be him' therefore, still be allowed into the offic??/ Just a thought His conduct, his hand and his general 'doesn't feel right'ness, means there has to be something else. Right???

Dumbledore died on purpose. maybe he realized something about the whole prophecy mission (like there wasn't anything more he could do, or that he would be a hindrance to harry in some way), and used Legilimens to get this message to Snape (or they already had the plan). Snape is also a Legilimens, so he is already well practised in mind tricks, so it wouldn't have been hard. The "begging Snape" thing wasn't Dumbledore begging for mercy, it was him begging Snape to kill him, thus satisfying whatever reason Dumdledore wanted to die and securing Snapes place within the trust of Voldemort.
