You're probably right. Dumbledore said that Snape came to the good side BEFORE Voldemort's fall; and I remmember something about that it was because he was terrified for what Voldemort was trying to do to Harry's mother, Lily (I'm not really sure of this part, I remmember anything but I'm not sure if I read it on the books or here). So, yes, probably he knew about Voldy's intentions but was not there to saw him do it.
