As all good fans know, most of the world uses the original title for book one . However, the U.S. fans know the book as Sorcerer's Stone.

Why was there a name change?

According to an interview, it was believed that U.S. readers would not understand the language or Concept of a mythical stone.

The philosopher's stone, a longtime "holy Grail" of Western alchemy, is a mythical substance that supposedly could turn inexpensive metals into gold; and/or also an elixir that would make humans immortal.

In modern times, Philosopher's Stone became a slang name for an hallucinogenic mushroom, Psilocybe mexicana, closely related to the more well-known Psilocybe cubensis.

I think that makes more sense than Sorcerer's Stone...

I agree. I know that I might not have understood the title, but what is the point of a good story if there isn't a challange? Besides, the definition of the Sorcerer's/ Philosopher's Stone is in the book. So it wouldn't really matter.

I like Sorcerer's Stone better, too. Sometimes I'm not sure what the characters are saying/doing because of the different Enlish/American slang. Most recently, for instance, I thought Harry's "trainer" might be his jock-strap, but it's a sneaker!

Hello MadamBones and Peeves - Let us not forget that it is the Americanized English which stands as the universal trade language in today's market. People are starting to recognize our English the world over to the point where it is quickly becoming superfluous to learn another language. I travel a little and I find someone who speaks English everywhere I go.
Trainer = jock strap! That's great!

Snogging was a little scary at first mention I was thinking along other lines until they said they were doing it in the common room and I thought NO WAY!

So its like making out (in American English) right nothing more?
