The joy of reading a book that it set somewhere else - is that you get to learn new words, new concepts, new dialects and a different way of thinking.

I think it would be a true travesty for the English - who speak English, to be told they are not allowed to use their version of English when writing a book that is set in England.

If "American english' were truly to be the world superior language - then don't call it 'ENGLISH". Call it AMERICAN. so that we can all be aware which version you prefer.

I - am Australian - and in our schools they teach ENGLISH and US ENGLISH. We are atleast aware of the difference. the 'language of commerce and trade' is not just American English. Go to Europe - they teach English (UK) there.

I would never have the audacity to ask the author of any book to rewrite it using words from my country so that I could understand it better.

I am so surprised to read the comments in this thread. I understand that most folk here are from the US, but to expect every book ever written to be in US english is rude. Shall we re-write Shakespeare too?

Good for you GB. I am a United States of American and I am perfectly capable of dealing with bogey and trainer and jumper and sorcerer's stone. As I have said in a previous thread, I am insulted that the British publishers even considered changing the books for the U.S. market.

Much of the delight in reading is entering a new story with its own language. Many of my most beloved children's books were from the British Isles. I was perfectly capable of dealing with Peter, Winnie and Alice in their own environments.

I guess that I had better quit ranting, but I could go on all day.

Thanks lunatica - I thought perhaps I got too carried away. I still think I did.

I wish that, as a person from the US, I had received the book in the style the author wrote it. I would much prefer to have the language of the setting. That some words were changed is an insult. But then, I am an experienced reader (read that as over 40) and prefer literary richness over convenience.

I would have also liked to simply have the UK version, unchanged. However, I have to admit that certain British slang words took me a second read through to understand, but by HBP, when I had the UK version, I honestly didn't notice a difference. I guess in some ways it was nice to have something to ease the transition, but it was probably also ultimately unneccessary. I looked through a small amount of the differences in the versions at Lexicon, and there really wasn't anything major- just very very minor sentence structure in certain cases- like a "had" in the UK version not in the US version.

In other words, "much ado about nothing". We, the US HP readers, would have figured it out. I would hazard to guess the average HP reader is not of average intelligence - (i sound slytherine!).
