It was just great I thought. It was expected, but Rowling played the dance out almost from the beginning. It wasn't just WHAM and they are together, I don't think that would have worked.

I also think the movies have treated it properly so far too. When Harry went to greet Buckbeak and Hermione grabs Ron's hand and they were both awkward was perfect!

I personally would much rather see Hermione shipped with someone else... but it was definitely expected. JKR made no secret of it, and it was obvious probably from the fourth book. (Though GoF only cemented, for people who aren't Ron/Hermione shippers, that Hermione could do better.)
I'm not sure I would have definitely wanted Harry/Hermione either...though I'd have preferred it over Ron/Hermione.

I could see it from the start. For me the tell-tell sign was how Hermione and Ron would bicker over lots. Almost like a married couple. I thought it was cute how they would fight and then take up for each other without thinking about it. As for the Harry and Hermione theiry, in my opion they acted more like best friends. I can't think of a better couple than Ron and Hermione other than Harry and Ginny.
