Harry was always popular he was just disliked and even when they hated him he is still popular because they talked about him. And Harry was not shy around girls, only Cho. And we have no evidence of Snape being shy around girls, and Snape was always hated.

Seamus treated Harry badly when the Daily Prophet was going after Harry. There were rumours going around the school about Harry being dangerous, unstable etc.... Most of the people who turned up for DA only went for Harry's notoriety.

Snape - I believe - was friends with other Slytherins... Lily never understood why Snape associated with them... In the beginning I imagine the Deatheaters thought they were revolutionaries... It would have been difficult to be Slytherin and to not join in I think. Particularly during your teenage years...
