Hey, Neville was a total loser when he was 11. Still kinda is a coward, though he tried to beat-up Malfoy in book 5, which is a good start for courage.
I think Neville just had a lot to overcome-- his parents were hero's in his g-ma's eyes. As a child she expected so much of him, being under such great pressure makes one clumsy and awkward. I think once Harry showed confidence in him he was able to acess his courage and his abillities. I love Neville! I think he is a good example of the sorting hat knowing what it was doing.

I think they should add a First Year Dormitory and leave sorting until the end of term or at the beginning of second year. I think beginning of second year would be better, but the first years should be more restricted from associating with the 3rd-7th years due to deeper rooted rivalries. Wouldn't want to expose them to this animosity between houses. This arrangement would prevent 1st years from participating in Quidditch, but balancing sports and schoolwork is more difficult at a young age, so all the better. The first years learn their strengths in magic, then get sorted into their respective houses. What do you think?

Peter made horrible choices-- because of fear mainly, selfish, self serving fear. True courage is what harry has-- a willingness to risk yourself to help others.
I totally agree.

I think Peter was good when he was sorted. The Dark Lord tortured him into doing his service. He was weak.

I think Peter was sorted into Gryffindor because he had great potential. He only turned out like he did because he was scared and made some bad decisions out of fear. Once he made a wrong choice he probably felt like there was no way out and was stuck with the choices he had made and that it was easier to keep going even if he knew what he was doing was wrong.
