JK Rowling had the imagination and insight to write the entire Harry Potter Series. I think it's safe to assume that she had some insight into many facets of the characters personality that we don't see.

I think ekin has a point ... a close physical attraction to Grindleward would have been a great inner conflict...after all ....it was the catalyst for many tragic events.

Grindleward is mentioned in Book one ...but on the train in Dumbledores chocolate frog card. A little seed was planted ...which was not uncovered until the very last.

Yes, Grindelwald was mentioned in the first book.
It didn't just come out of nowhere.
But I wouldn't say it was the ONLY reason. Just the strongest reason.

That seems likely to me. I don't think it's the reason she invented the character that way, but a reason for making this information public.

Now that's two separate issues.

1) Why did she make the character thus?
inner conflict caused by Grindelwald
subtle things that are difficult to explain

2) Why did she make the information public?
political statemet
bored / wanted attention
because it's true

er if he is gay he is gay way are we still debating this??

The debate is over. Now we're analyzing it in more depth.
Personally, I have had time to recover from the initial shock and revulsion and have moved on. It's now just another facet of a complex character in JKR's complex world.

To make such a political statement in a children's book caught me off-guard. I needed time to regain my balance. But now I think it makes sense.
