Lol..I always thought mother-tongue sounded a bit gross. I like mother language much better.

Back to talking about the thread before Psyduck decides to kick me again.

We should not limit ourselves to to Hitler's sad regime. There are many other instances in world history that shows one race dominating another. And it goes far back. The might is right thingamajig. There was the slave trade; the Spannish obbliteration of the native Americans, which was continued by the neo-native Americans; the British rule over the Indian sub-continent; the decline of the Aborigines in Australia; Apartheid, the sanctioning of racial segregation in South Africa; The Iraqi domination of the Kurds, and indeed, sadly, what has followed thereon..I can continue. Each of these unfortunate episodes had central figures leading the insanity, some unlike Hitler, or Voldemort in this case, were clever enough to mask their intentions. So why are we stuck on one pathetic example in the Third Reich.

If I have hurt anyone's feelings, I am sincerely sorry. That was not my intention. The thread has led itself in this direction.

You have a very valid point, and well made. Hitler had no monopoly on evil. Perhaps we all focused on that era because of the book's European connections, as in Fleur and Viktor and their respective schools.

Galadriel is just so elven that it transcends any kind of male or female biases, to me. Of course, she is a very strong figure, as well as powerful (Helped bring down the forces of Dol Guldur when Lorien was attacked, after all.) She just doesn't really have a counterpart in HP or the real world because of that etherealness.

As for the real world connections, I still stand by the idea that it is more about culture and a general historical trend than any specific events.
However, as for Grindelwald, I would have to be inclined to say that has definite WWII era allusions.

Dear Alohamora,
Thank you for saying that!
I fully agree, and as far as I remember it was one of the things I tryed to say when this thread was started.
There are some obvious connections JKR made to WWII, (Dumbledore vs.Grindelwald 1945) BUT she had much more in her mind than that. Otherwise she could have made the connections much more direct.

If you look carefully, Voldemort's designs for the future mostly seem to resemble the South African Apartheid more than anything else. The wizard community was a minority. He wanted to establish rulership of this minority over the majority muggle population. Almost, if not exactly, what happend in the Africas. Looking at it from the point of view of the Spanish and Aztecs would also work, I think.
