There's no slamming in here! Especially from McDirector!! I have done some really silly posts and everyone has always been very patient with me. And, as an elf, that's quite important to me Last edited by jelf : 07-29-2007 at 12:55 PM.

My bad. I was just skimming through because there was a lot of stuff written since the last time I was on. See, I can't spend much time here because I have a TON of school reading I gotta take care of. It makes me edgy.

By the way, I think that J K Rowling was sticking with what she knew because that's what authors like Jane Austen did...Austen never had any conversations between men in her books because she had never heard a conversation between men without a women present (since she herself was a woman). I do think she could've done a little research though. She has enough money to visit overseas, in any case. She doesn't have to lift a finger the rest of her life!

Well, I think another aspect (or maybe just excuse) of the limitedness of the Wizarding World, as far as magical populations in other countries/continents has to do with the fact that the books are definetly skewed towards Harry's perspective- who probably doesn't know anything about other wizarding worlds. After all, he only discovers them in the 4th book. Of course, Rowling wrote this sooo.... All you reasons sound right as well, but just as far as the last couple books, Harry probably wasn't keen on doing research on overseas wizards- and their goverment probably didn't want to get involved in the British wizarding world's war.

I'm from the U.K and I can understand why she wanted to stick to 'what she knew'. I agree that she coulda done research but when you've grown up and lived with particular traditions and slang etc, it's much easier to make it realistic. Iykwim.

Well I'm Australian, and there were times in the book where i thought about the rest of the world - like when they have to speak to the prime minister. I suppose the justification would be that if she were to include the rest of the world;' a) there'd be no relevance to the story and b) it would have made the books significantly bigger and we are seeing the world through harry's eyes... the book could be different if say, we read it as a book called neville longbottom, with his tales about his friend harry potter etc. could be interesting!
