Default Brit vs. American

I find it rather insulting that the publishers decided to change some of the words in the American edition of HP. I think it's charming to read "motorbike" instead of "motorcycle", "bobble hat" for "bonnet" and "Sellotape" instead of "Scotch tape" (which should really be adhesive tape or something since Scotch tape is 3M's brand name).

Where did you find that?
The differences in the Half-Blood Prince are listed in
HPL: Differences: HBP
But can they have digested the Deathly Hallows already?

Sorry to be unclear. I was really talking about the whole series. My mentions were actually from book 1. There doesn't seem to be a general HP book section on this site. Or at least I haven't located it yet.

You are right to be dubious about them being able to digest DH this soon. Though there may be someone working on it even as I type.

I agree -- an English series should be an English series. It is a bit insulting.

I read all of Agatha Christie and figured it out

I am glad you agree. Isn't that half of the purpose of reading - to take you into another world?

If we can become fluent with muggles and horcruxes and such I think we can handle British English. And again, there is a certain charm in reading the British words and phrases.

I do remember when I was young and reading Agatha Christie's Tommy and Tuppence and coming across phrases that I'd have to ponder over. I did get them.

And what about books like the Secret Garden. You do learn a lot about other countries when you read books written in those countries.

Exactly right. What if they tried to translate all those literary tea times with biscuits and scones into milk (or Coke!) with cookies.

Lol why'd anybody want to substitue tea with coke? I lived in both parts and now drink both tea and coffee .. but black without sugar .. and loads of it.
