Right. The shard in Harry was destroyed.
So the thing under the chair at King's Cross was
what was left of the last part of Voldemort's soul.

Jon: Since voldemort was afraid of death, did he choose to be a ghost? If so, where does he haunt or is this not possible due to his horcruxes?

J.K. Rowling: No, he is not a ghost. He is forced to exist in the stunted form we witnessed in King's Cross.

Does that mean for eternity? And where? In that limbo place?

Well, I thought that he definetly died, so that in whatever Life after Death kind of setting there is, I took that to mean he had exist in that form there. Obviously a lot ambiguity because it becomes a question of personal belief.

Here is my take on the issue-- The small miserable thing was the portion of Volemorts soul that resided in Harry. (as stated before) When he killed Harry he killed that part of his soul. Because of the blood he took from harry, Harry could stay connected to life. Kings Cross was like an afterlife inbetween place-- Harry had to choose, if you remember, wether to "catch a train" and move on or go back to life.

That 1/8 of Volemorts soul was small because it was only a tourtured little part. He was beyond help because he wasn't really there. He was struggling in his own personal he** never to be able to move on to the better place. Harry could see him because their death was connected. He observed the misery but couldn't help him-- no one could. I think that is why he suggests in his last duel with Voldy that he should try for some remorse-- perhaps if he had "repented" or felt sorry for what he had done his purgatory might not have been what Harry observed. It was scaly and ugly because it represents how twisted and wicked his soul is, even in parts.

Yeah..I kind of guessed that was it. The baby I think represented 7/8ths of the portion of Voldemort's soul that had already been destroyed. But JKR said that Voldemort would remain in that state. Purgatory you think?

What's an "EW?"

No, she didn't. The Horcrux that was in Harry had already been destroyed before we saw the thing. She said that is all that is left of Voldemort himself.

So do you think that JKR was angling at a kind of purgatory of wizarding death.
