Really, what DO people have against 4, 5, 6 hour movies? It is SO completely worth it. Or at least release (very) extended editions for the real fans.

The Titanic lasted forever and it was a bit of a success - I think the movie fan pool has so many non-readers, that the screenwriters are writing to them versus the fans - who will be fans and buy the tickets no matter what

Oh, definitely, the longer movies would surely be bad for box office as well as the movie fan base- but I think JK, as an author, should defend her most devoted fans from the money-making fans who barely understand Harry Potter as it is. (And more likely than not have simply found their newest on-screen crush.)

thats so true. i said that at the end of 5, i wouldn't have cared if it was 2 hours longer. think about pirates of the carribean and lord of the rings, those 3 films were each well over 3 hours? (from what i remember) and harry potter i think extends to a much much wider fan base.

one of the reasons i think this is because for my friends who haven't read the books, and only see the movies - i feel like the miss out on so much of the tiny details. the whole house elf 'world', and a lot of the conversation harry, ron and hermione have with each other, which always seem to be figuring out some sort of mystery..

anyway, i think i would even be happy with a mini series. So many things happen in chapters of the book, which need to be concentrated on one at a time. i think a mini series - or even a tv show - would do it justice.
having said that though i dont want them to start one, i couldn't think of another harry potter other than daniel radcliffe - the visualisation you have of characters whilst your reading is so important. I think even JK would have had daniel's face in her mind while she wrote the last couple of books.

I personally have a very hard time imagining Harry Potter as a Tv-show, or even a mini-series, because it doesn't have that kind of day to day or show to show plot, and the overall plot spans so much time that viewers who didn't obsessively watch and would proabably rather just sit an extra 1 1/22 -2 hours for the movies would be lost. I still think an extended edition, with special scenes filmed just for this purpose from the book would be the best solution to be able to appeal to the movie base in theaters and satisfy the real book fan base. Part of the reason HP appeals to such a wide demographic as opposed to say LOTR is that it IS shorter, people do NOT have to pay too much attention to get the overall idea of the movie, and younger kids can watch it as well who don't neccesarily want to read the books to get the full benefit. (Which I think is all ridiculous, but it seems to be working as far as profits. One of these days we need to organize a ban against seeing it in theaters.)
