The doe shows that Snape loved and is still in love with Lilly. I think that chapter in the book is the best. It showed that Snape loved Lilly and saw Harry only as James. Snape is a hero and I wish that we knew more about what he had to put up with from Voldemort.

i don't understand why he sends his patronus out the window? is it to prove he loved Lily because she too cast a doe as her patronus?
anyway to save everyone looking it up, this is what it says before and after it happens..
(the conversation is between snape 'S' and Dumbeldore 'd')
S: I have spied for you and lied for you, put myself in mortal danger for you. Everything was supposed to be to keep Lily Potter's son safe. Now you tell me you have been raising him like a pig for slaughter. -
D: But this is touching Severus, Have you grown to care for the boy, after all?
S: For him? snape shouted, 'Expecto Patronum!"
From the tip of his wand burst the silver doe: she landed on the office floor, bounded once across the office and soared out of the window. Dumbeldore watched her fly away and as her silvery glow faded he turned back to snape, and his eyes were full of tears.
D: After all this time?
S: Always
And the scene shifted, now Harry saw snape talking to the portrait of dumbeldore behind his desk. (Explains about telling death eaters time of harrys departure)

it could be simple but i have confused myself!
Simple? Snape's love for Lily is not simple by any stretch of the imagination. The doe symbolizes that love, for Lily. Lily is the doe to James' Prongs.....It did not matter to Severus that she married someone else, what mattered is that he loved her and would do all in his power to keep some part of her safe--in this case, her son. Her son who inherited "his mother's eyes." He turned from Voldemort due to his love for Lily. He schemed with Dumbledore in vain trying to keep her safe. He was a "double agent" risking his own life over and over again to protect all he had left of Lily.....Ms. Rowling has truly ended a phenomenal love story in the prince's tale....

Yes, I thind we all have a completeley different view of Snape, and now i think that without his courage to bring about the plans Harry would of probably never survived. Wow to think that he always loved Lily, no wonder he hated James, now we know what snape would have seen in the mirror of erised. I guess that one can actullysay that Snape was a HERO.

Well put! The fact that he loved Lily enough to save James's son....well, that had to be difficult for Severus with as much as Harry looked like his father.

He was a strict teacher, but very talented in his field. Why was he so obsessed with the DADA job? Was he concerned with the defense--or the dark arts themselves.....Did Harry learn enough in his class to defend himself, or did he ignore what Severus had to offer as with the occlumency (I think I spelled that one wrong) lessons? We can all learn something from everyone in our lives if we would just pay attention! AHacker

thanks.

i wasn't suggesting the situation was simple, merely the meaning of him doing it, only because the chapter switched between different memories so quickly. but i realise now it was what i thought all along.

for him to show to dumbeldore he could still produce a doe as his patronus, demonstrated his eternal love for Lily. and dumbeldore said, after all this time? and said replied with 'always'. i think this shows such a great side to snape.
he remained faithful to his love, 16/17 years after her death.
i always knew dumbeldore had very good reason to trust him! i'm glad jk showed it to us

that's exactly what I was questioning/pondering - why wasn't Snape in the last scene of the book in one of the frames as he was a headmaster? there's no way Harry would not have noticed if Snape was there - and so, why wasn't he???

Dumbledore's appeared and he was asleep right after he first died. I agree that Snape's portrait should have been hanging in the Headmaster's office too. Unmentioned in the story so maybe it was [at least in my imagination it was]

I'll admit to being rather tired by the time I got to the end (and perhaps since it was the wee hours of the morning nodding off even). Is it possible that Harry just didn't think to turn around to look for the portrait?

I'm rereading the book now so I'll know soon enough if this is a stupid question. (but go ahead and thrash me if it is )
