It's kind of funny when you think about it...

I mean, 5 out of the six main students were introduced in the first book. But Luna was introduced in the fifth.
Don't get me wrong, I adore Luna. But it makes you wonder how good a writer JKR has to be to make us love her as much as the other five... (Or at least Neville and Ginny).

Yes, it did make me ponder this before. But personally, I think JKR made it. I love Luna more than Ginny and Neville, in fact. She's just so special and unpretentious.

Wasn't Luna in the year below? IE the same year as Ginny? It would have been very difficult to introduce her in book 1 then wouldn't it?


We only met Ginny because she was part of the Weasley clan.....

Though the Lovegoods were mentioned in passing in GoF... But I don't find it strange Luna didn't have much of a part to play until the 5th book.

she is a very brave person and she doesnt back down when they go to the department of mysteries. so i like her just as much as the others

Well, Gryff girl makes a good point- Luna couldn't have been introduced during PS because she's a year below the Trio.
I think part of the reason that Luna was introduced later, and part of the reason that she works as a character anyway is because she's such a strong, odd (in a good way), and unique character. If she had been introduced to early on, it might have felt like too much of a departure to what readers could relate to- as far as personalities, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, most main characters aren't exactly fringe stereotypes. Luna, in a way, is, which means that she is introduced in an almost fully formed manner, and it takes less interaction for us to see and appreciate who Luna is.
