As we learned in the 7th book, Snape was never loyal to Dumbledore.
He was loyal to some twisted idea of guilt.
Dumbledore just happened to be the right enabler for Snape's illness.

I believe Snape was vey loyal to Dumbledore. Snape has reason to seem the way he seems. The guys been through a lot. Being in love with Lily being hated by James Potter and his friends. Induring time with the dark lord. Not being allowed to be a Teacher of the Defense against the Dark Arts.

This survey, being from November of 2006, does not include "NONE OF THE ABOVE." as an option.
Snape's twisted mind was loyal to something, but it ain't on this list.

And while we're on the subject of "loyalty," any loyalty to Dumbledore is beside the point.
Taking down Voldemort was the main issue.
If an enemy of an enemy is a friend, then yes, Snape was Dumbledore's friend.
Personally, I prefer that my friendships be... oh, I don't know... something more.

People were fighting and dying for what they believed to be a worthy cause, and
Dumbledore just happened to be the leader.
You'd have to be a fool to fight like that just because some old man asked you to.

Yeah, I ended up putting to Dumbledore, but not exactly, no. He definitely had SOME loyalty to Dumbledore in particular- but he was loyal to the cause, not the person. (But I think that's the more appropriate thing anyway. You don't join the Light just because Dumbldore is the head of the Order. :/)

And, yes, he was loyal to the cause not really for the right reasons either- but they weren't that twisted. I really don't think they were that much more horrible than just being loyal to something because your parents told you to, or something like that.

I think killing Dumbledore was the biggest show of loyalty to Dumbledore, because Dumbledore was asking a lot of Severus witht that little manuveur. Played it dirty too. And Severus still did it, not only because it was necessary but also partly because he did feel he some commitment to Dumbledore and he had been specifically asked.
