Because the generation gap causes certain indelible differences in philosophy and that results in some situations where each side firmly believes it is right, as the "truth" is objective depending on these philosophies.

And then there are times when parents, as all human beings are wont to be, genuinely stupid. As those under these parents' command- I mean, tutelage- falliability seems magnified a hundredfold.

Youth, in many cases, means that you're looking, many times, from the outside. There's a logical place for everything if one takes the time to think about it, but some things, unfortunately, just haven't been experienced although they are unavoidable with age.

Anyway- why is being self-aware painful?

Why is it too late to apologize?
(Sorry, I'm listening to that song Apologize by One Republic & I can't help thinking...why is it too late to 'apologize'?)

Down the drain of Bush-Cheney and the failings of capitalism-consumerism (which doesn't account for the fact -horror! *sarcastic*- that energy sources and materials are actually, ultimately, limited.)

Why do people insist on defending and believing in things for no other reason than their being told that thing was true?
