We wouldn't have a story, because Peter never would have been able to transform... actually, we'd still have a story, but one with Sirius as the innocent one... unless Peter hadn't betrayed the Potters because he wouldn't have been able to get away... hmm...

A quick escape essentially saved him from Voldemort and the death eaters......
