I'm not looking to start a war. What I meant was that they were all men, and all from the same, tiny, lily-white area of the world.
We have six habitable continents, filled with men and women.
Around here, when you start that kind of thing, you have to include everybody. Or at least spread it out more.
Not offensive, just a little out-dated and ethno-centric.
And anyway, I thought it would be more fun with kids' names and veggies.

In a far away land, it was known that if you drank poison, the only way to save yourself is to drink a stronger poison, which neutralizes the weaker poison. The king that ruled the land wanted to make sure that he possessed the strongest poison in the kingdom, in order to ensure his survival, in any situation. So the king called the kingdom's pharmacist and the kingdom's treasurer, he gave each a week to make the strongest poison. Then, each would drink the other one's poison, then his own, and the one that will survive, will be the one that had the stronger poison.
The pharmacist went straight to work, but the treasurer knew he had no chance, for the pharmacist was much more experienced in this field, so instead, he made up a plan to survive and make sure the pharmacist dies. On the last day the pharmacist suddenly realized that the treasurer would know he had no chance, so he must have a plan. After a little thought, the pharmacist realized what the treasurer's plan must be, and he concocted a counter plan, to make sure he survives and the treasurer dies. When the time came, the king summoned both of them. They drank the poisons as planned, and the treasurer died, the pharmacist survived, and the king didn't get what he wanted.
What exactly happened there?

No idea.
Maybe the treasurer gave him water, to spite the king?
Or maybe they both switched the poisons?

The king was an idiot and should have been poisoned, at the earliest opportunity.

Whatever the answer, it reminds me of a lot of dumb things that go on in the real world. And that reminds me of Pam's Paradox:

Pam, our guinea pig, was very sick and had lost about half of her weight. In addition to the medicine from the vet, I hand-fed her for about six months with a syringe. Mushy stuff, kind of like baby food, made it with wheat germ, apple juice and various raw veggies.
When I fed her, I put her on the table on a towel and folded half of the towel over her. They are very timid creatures and are uncomfortable in big, open spaces. Between bites, I let her hide.
As is her nature, she would push into the fold of the towel in an effort to get more cover. Unfortunately, the more she pushed into the fold, the less cover she got.
I used this counter-productive behavior to introduce to my children the concept I now call "Pam's Paradox." I left it at that and did not immediately compared it to any of the dumb things our culture is doing.

I think the King didn't feel comfortable trusting the pharmacist to have more knowledge about poisons. I think the treasurer's initial plan was to switch the poisons.... and then the pharmacist figured this would happen and then switched the poisons again.
