I still find that Giant, Man-Eating Spiders to be a bit more than coincidence, especially since both are actually named characters.
The others are a bit more of a stretch, however the Dementors and the Nazgul have quite a lot in common. Black robed, bodiless wraiths, that instill freezing fear with their very presence, that exude a force that sucks the life and strength of people, be it happiness or courage, drains hope, and are rather difficult to defeat or resist without iron will.
OK, agree that there characters is similar.
But there are many differences also.
We don't know anything about who the Dementors are, or where they come from. (I think someone is asking someone else about this, but without getting any answer - but I can't even remember in which book it was)

About the Nazgul we know all these things, they are clearly defined.

Saurons 'will' remained in the ring while it was lost for hundreds/thousands of years. His physical body did not survive. (sound familiar?)

in Lord of the Rings - often, Aragorn/Strider when searching for the hobbits would describe them as 'children' to a man's eye. Tolkien wrote the Hobbit & LOTR for his children. I do think having 'child sized' hobbits was deliberate. As was the description of the lands of middle earth. (I think hobbiton is like a rural english village, rohan is like the viking lands of scandinavia, gondor is like russia with it's steel grey/ivory towers tall and forboding....)

I agree with the Merry & Pip = Fred & George similarity. the mischief, sense of fun, but with hearts true to the cause until the very end.

Also Galdalf & Dumbledore were both questioned for their 'counsel' - both accused of turning up for the wrong reasons, being the bearer of bad news. as seen when Gandalf first tries to talk with the King of Rohan, and when Dumbledore tries and tries to tell the ministry that Voldemore is back.

There is suspicion of the messenger when the truth to be told is unpalatable. this also applies when Merry & Pip try to convince the Treebeard to join the way. It takes a long time to convince them that the fight for middle earth is a fight for all, not just wizards and men.

I do not know of many authors who have created their own words & history that have infiltrated popular usage as much as Tolkien, Rowling and Shakespeare. It truly is a wonderful literary feat.

Perhaps the properties of the three Hallows - invisibility, to control immeasurable power, to bring back the dead (in some form)... whoever wore the ring would be invisible to the eye, had luck/power in battle, saw the dead in a different form. (frodo could see the nazgul as their former selves) (Harry could see those who died on his final march to Voldemort)

it's fascinating - truly fascinating. I love both series passionately and look forward to more thoughts

For the Dementors and the Nazgul, the overall idea is very similar- to me, JK took the general air of the Nazgul and tweaked it took make her own creatures. Obviously, they are much less important in HP, which has less historical background in general. We barely know anything about many of the characters, not to even go into the creatures. If it had been copied that closely, it would have been considered plagarism.

Both have Wizards
Both have 'little people' - hobbits, children as the main protagonists
Both show the value of friendship (it's ups and downs) despite many and varied hardships
Both tell a tale of good v immeasurable evil
Both have 'elves' - although what is Elvish and what is 'elfish' differs significantly
Both have incredible history and language. (perhaps moreso with Tolkien though)
Both have trolls.

What other similarities and differences have you noticed?

yes there are some similarites but then again the storyes of witches and wizards have been around a long time..

and good & evil and friendship can bee seen in every day life so they just incorporated it to the books

i love them both
but the harry Potter books apeal to me more becasue of the age, i grew up reading them. THe Lord of the Rings takes place 100's of years ago
HP not so!!!!!!

another similarity - because I've read them both so many times and know the characters so very well - because both authors are out all the time.

I can pick up any of the books, read a few pages and be immediately into the book. I can know where I am and what I'm reading. That's not the author - it's because of the author and because of me.
