Default How many lucky turns? (another chapter for “T.I.R.A.D.E.”)

It seemed as though every page had an extremely unlikely event that helped Harry along.

Good fiction starts with a premise and then sticks with it. However fantastic, we can accept it if it’s presented at the beginning. These are the limits… This is possible, this is not... Bad fiction uses trick endings that break all of the rules established at the beginning.

JKR made the rules. We accepted the magic. We accepted the history. We accepted the personalities. We accepted everything because it was made clear at the beginning. Then, in the Deathly Hallows, she broke all of her own rules and turned a great series into trash.

She even invented the Lucky Potion, but didn’t use it or any other device on the day of the showdown. (From the Gringotts break-in through King’s Cross, it all happened in one day.)

There’s another one: a) that Narcissa just happened to be so close, b) that Voldemort chose her, and c) that she thought fast enough to do it.

I give this one a full 1.00 point for being extremely unlikely. How many can you find? If it’s not as bad as this one, you can give yours an 0.5 or 0.8 if you like.

We’ve talked about a lot of the big issues. This thread is for the nitpicky ones.

but this was nothing new, from book one, harry was always in the right place, at the rifgt moment, heard the righ confersation...
book1: between snape and querrel
book2: between molly and arthur
book3: the minister in the hogsmeade
book4: hagrid and madame malemour
and go on....
what i thought lucky in book 7 was their scape from the misistry, finding eachother and umbridge at the right moment, and umbridge needing the very person hermione was changed into..

Yes, he got lucky once in a while. But not all the time.
So, in chronological order, we have:

1. "Their scape from the Ministry, finding each other and Umbridge at the right moment, and Umbridge needing the very person Hermione was changed into." (Is this one item or three? Do do you give it one full point?)

2. Narcissa told Voldemort that Harry was dead. 1.00 lucky point

I need to read the book again and make a tally. AND I'm taking a javascript class right now, so that's all that's on my feeble brain.

I'll be reading though (as I have been )

We'll never know if JK wrote the last book carelessly so that she could start a new series earlier , or she really wanted HP to end like that .

Just Book 7?
I can think of 10 right off the bat!

Falling into the protective charms of Tonks parents house
The Minister giving bequithed items (legacy's from Dumbledores death) to Harry on the last night at the Burrow
Shakelbolts Talking patronus ...Just in time
Hermione having a bag of trickys all ready ... with cloak and ALL
Kreachers pain revealed ...(to find Mundungus)

etctetcetc ...but the one I thought was really lucky !!!!!

Being in the same forest as a group of travellers who, stopped for water at exactly that point in the stream where they could talk and reveal news from a far that could be heard through the Muffliato charm (So ...you can here them ...but they can't hear you! Now that's lucky ......

or is that oober fantasmagorical ingenious?

Ten? I see six. Where are the others?

At just that moment, when all seems lost… How would you rate it? A 0.9 or a 1.0?

He does give the excuse of the 30-day rule, but yes, that was incredibly feeble. At first I wanted to give this one a 0.7. But – hey, wait a minute – has anyone counted the days to determine Dumbledore’s exact date of death? How can it have been July first if it was a normal school day? This one isn’t just about incredible luck. It’s also about bad math. 1.0

That one wasn’t so bad. Voldemort predicted in the first chapter (you were probably too busy worrying about the Muggle Studies teacher to notice) that the ministry would fall “next Saturday,” and I presume that the wedding was on a Saturday. And of course, Shacklebolt would do all that he could to warn them. 0.3?

I could defend Hermione’s little bag by reminding you that she worked hard on it. But I won’t.
Does anyone remember Gilligan’s Island? Any time they needed an expert in something, “the Professor” was there. How anyone would be an expert in so many unrelated fields they never fully explained, and neither does JKR. 1.0?

I didn’t understand this one.

I promised myself I wouldn't go off the scale; that the worst one would be the standard. Now I need to knock the others all down a peg.

Hermione's smart. How can you honestly expect her to not be prepared. That's a total zero on the lucky scale.
They were heading for Tonks's parents'. That's about a 0.2.
And Psyduck, it's not 30 days since dumbledore died, it's 30 days since his will was recovered.
Kingsley sent the Patronus just in time because 1.He works at the Ministry, 2. He's a high-ranking Auror, &3. Everything happened so fast he didn't have anymore time.
Kreacher was Harry's servant. He had to listen to him, and Hermione remembered that he might have nicked the locket. I don't think that was luck at all.
But I must agree on the last one. That was very lucky. (But not the Muffliato part.) Hey, what's a good book without a little luck?

1) Of course the Grey Lady just happened to be near when Harry needed her.
2) The entire tiara horcrux was beyond lucky. Harry remembering it at exactly the right moment, snatching it up at the last second, but most importantly, out of that entire room of hidden objects- Harry manages to but the Prince's potion book next to the tiara. Or the tiara next to the book.
3) Hogsmeade- them being near enough to the Hog's Head that Aberforth could cover for them. And that his cover was even accepted, at all. They could have had drastically different Patonuses.
4) If you think about it- the one group they overhear, that they need, is the one being kept in the Malfoy Manor basement? How many other groups were probably running away from the Snatchers, after all?
5) Finding the shard of Sirius' Mirror- There being a shard of Sirius' Mirror large enough to still use. I'm suprised under all of Harry's books it wasn't crushed to smithereens.

More, but I' feel nearly incoherent...so I can't think of any now. :/
