Cedric Diggory

Was just thinking last night: if Cedric was in his seventh year of Hogwarts when he did the tri-wazard tournament and therefore got to miss out on end of year tests, would he have had to miss out on NEWTS? Given that two years before hand in Harry's second year end of year exams were cancelled to celebrate the victory over the basilisk - that would mean his OWLS might have been cancelled too. Does anyone know how if he had survived he would have qualified as a wizard?

I don't know...
I assume that if you have the ability to do magic at all, it qualifies you as a wizard.
The N.E.W.T.s are like standardized tests; they tell you how good you are in what subjects, and where you ought to be, right?

I think you're right Mione, but it is an interesting question nonetheless. Sure he would be allowed to do magic and all, but what would the career prospects for him or anyone else in his class if they hadn't taen them.

My guess would be though that in the years they didn't have the end of year exams they still had O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s as they are conducted by the ministry, not the school. So, I think Cedric and his year would have been fine.

Skipping the OWLs and NEWTs would make no sense. They were only talking about regular school exams.
