I wouldn't take Dung out because I wouldn't, as far as the plot, alter anyone who has so much as touched a Horcrux. At least until the very end. And as far as Snape/Dumbledore being able to influence the Order even after their absence from it, they need Dung- think the Seven Potters idea- so even if one was to eliminate Dung, there would have to be someone to fill his role. I don't find him very replaceable in that aspect- I can't think of any Order members who walk the line between being trusted and accessible in more, uh, questionable areas. Professors are a possibility, but if you don't replace them with another a character, does that mean the entire Hogwarts subject either disappears or gets shunted even more to the background?
As far as Harry'peers- are those social interactions really THAT important to the story? Who is to say that one of them couldn't have fulfilled multiple roles? Likeable enough, certainly, but... well, once you get into somewhat major character levels, everyone seems crucial. I just don't think making Hermione jealous or Harry mad is necessary to the story arc. |
