You will not be able to see the Chat Box until you have made five or six posts.
After that, you won't be able to get away from it.
Do nothing, and the first six lines of it shows at the top of your screen when you are inside a thread.
Click the "Live Chat" button and you will see about fifteen lines of it.

To make LIve Chat work your way, click “Your Options” and then “Edit Options.”
Then scroll down to the bottom of the page. (Not the Miscellaneous. Go up a notch. There.)

Chat Box Options:
This allows you to turn the Chat Box on and off.
It also allows you to pick a Font, Size and Color.
Please do.
Following the conversation is easier if every body's voice is in a different color.

This is so slow!
It takes so long to move from one page to another, I lose my train of thought.
One way to make things move faster is to change the number of posts that show on each page.

Click "Your Options," the, "Edit Options," and scroll down to "Thread Display Options."
You can change it there. When you are finished, remember to scroll down and click the "Save" button.

Another way is to turn off all the signatures. It just makes them invisible.

Suggestions on this topic from other members are welcome.

Dear Psysquid,

Thank you for registering at Harry Potter Chat!
Harry Potter Chat began May 1, 2004 as a birthday present to a very special young lady. She and her sister have been spending years starting threads, pruning out spam, moving topics, helping people discover all kinds of things about Harry Potter.

Harry Potter Chat is a family site. You may meet little ones curled up on the couch with their grandma or grandma reaching out to other little ones. You may also meet teens, who grew up with Harry Potter. We have adults who guide discussions about theories and interpretations. We have about the greatest range of people on this planet. In fact, people from all over the world have discovered HPC.

We are glad you have chosen to be a part of our community and we hope you enjoy your stay. There are a few things we would like to tell you so that your time on Harry Potter Chat is more enjoyable.

POSTING INCREASES FEATURES* ~
The more you post, the more features become available to you. Please, though, do not be silly and just post one word posts. In fact, caretakers may remove your posts and you lose credit. Be thoughtful and use full sentences. Sometimes people are just learning English and so keep the punctuations and use complete sentences.

LIVE CHAT ~
Live Chat only becomes available after you have reached a certain number of posts. After you have posted for awhile, all of a sudden, the site will look different to you. There are hidden forums, live chat rooms, and videos.
POST YOUR INTRODUCTION ~ To get started, there is a Hogwarts Express forum available for you to post an introduction. Start there by introducing yourself. Next, say hello to several others.

How many Wizards and Witches are on the site? We never know for sure because several keep their invisibility cloaks on and just watch to make sure no one gets harmed. However, our best guess is that anywhere from 8-10 are active at one time. There could be as many as 5-10 chatting away.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS ~
Please let your friends know about the greatest HP community on the web.
All the best,

Dumbledore, Hermione, MarkEvans, Harry Potter, Voldemort, and the whole gang of CaretakersHarry Potter Chat

I hope this helps.

Yup
You can go to

"Your Options" and click on Edit Profile. Also, "Edit Signature" allows for things too.

I think you need to be first or second year before you can upload some pics.... Not entirely confident about when.

I hope this points you in the right direction.

Cheers,

Why can everyone else have elaborate signatures? When I try to add more than a few lines, I get this message:
Quote:
Your signature can not be longer than 500 characters excluding BB Code markup.
Even when I don't use any codes -- just plain text.

So many clubs! Where can I find them, and how do I join?
We have a number of informal little clubs, just for fun. All you need to do to join is post on that thread and say that you want to join. Many clubs also ask that you mention them in your signature.

The Headquarters of each club is in the thread where it was introduced.

The "Dumbledore Lives" club, now located in the "Dumbledore's Army" forum, started it all. I don't suppose we will see many new members to that one.

The "Holy Club" is just for silliness. It started on George Weasley's joke about being "holy" and proceeded to talk about how our pet theories can turn out to be full of holes.

We really should get back to this.
If you see a thread in the wrong forum, let me know so I can move it or split it.

From July, 2005:
Quote:
Originally Posted by Dumbledore View Post

A. Administrators are moving threads into the proper forums. We are also splitting off posts that do not have to do with the topic title. Look for your thread in the proper forum. Please do NOT repost your comment. Instead use the search feature to locate the post in all of the forums. In addition, you are able to go to My Controls and click on your latest posts. This will take you to your post.

Important Notice
Some posts that are less than three words and do not contribute to a thread are being deleted. This will be determined by the Administrators. Please do NOT spam the forums with "OK" "Yeah" "UH HUH" as well as "I'm confused" .. Instead, add something of value to the thread.
We do have a place for the "Ok"s and the "Yeah"s. It's in the Live Chat.

What happened to my shouts?

On the front page of Harry Potter Chat, down near the bottom, is the "What's Going On" section.
This shows, among other things, the current five top "shouters."

So, if you had a lot of shouts, but they were numbered 2500-2700... they disappear.
The only thing I'm not sure of is 'how many shouts' it keeps a record of.
I just picked the number 3000 so I could use an example.
I hope this helps.

I think I'm starting to get this. In the Live Chat Archives, it shows about 25 "shouts" per page. Right now, it has 212 pages and only goes back to January 15th.
