My review I saw it at the midnight showing as well. Good number of people dressed up here as well. We had the best seats in the house and it was a lot of fun.
Let me start with the good:
I thought they did an excellent job of condencing the book, which is a
considerable feat as the book is over 800 pages. The way they condenced the DA meetings and the Ministry proclomations (or whatever they're called) made sense, I didn't feel that there were any gaping holes, which is exactly the feeling I got from Goblet of Fire. There were some changes made (I'll get to the ones I felt were innappropriate later) that served to move the story. For example, Sirius gives Harry he picture of the original Order of the Phoenix instead of Mad Eye. This is fine as it served to further develop the relationship between Sirius and Harry which is vital to this story.
Another thing that was done well (especially compared to GoF) were the
relationships. Relationship development was completely lost in GoF and and they definitely put more focus on that in Order of the Phoenix.
I thought Michael Gambdon did a better job this time around than in GoF,
although most of my problems with him in that film were the fault of the
director. Alan Rickman was fantastic as always. I would've liked to have
seen more of him, but that's always the case. Imelda Staunton (sp?) was
great as Umbridge. Overall the acting was quite good.
Criticism:
There were a few times where there were continuuity issues. The one I can remember at the moment was right after Harry's detention with Umbridge where he has cut into his hand. Hermione and Ron spoke as if they knew what had happened without being told. There were a couple times when characters knew things they shouldn't have known.
There were sometimes details missing that could have been there without
much more work or screentime. For example, the scene in Dumbledore's office in which the DA has been ratted out. First of all, that had the rat be Cho. I suppose they didn't want to introduce another character, but this just didn't feel right. Hermione's piece of having whatever it was written across that girls face for ratting them out was gone. Also, Dumbledore just apparated with Fawkes, there was no bit where Kingsley and Mad Eye knocked everyone out. There wasn't any real need to leave all that out and it would have been enriched with it.
I felt there should have been more of the fight the DA have with the Death Eaters. This book (and this film up o that point) was so much about
empowerment of these kids, but you dn't really get to see it played out all
that much. Also, once members of the order show, the DA goes and hides
behind a rock and stops fighting. I was dissapointed by that.
There were some changes made that I found unnecessary. During the fight in the Dept. of Mysteries, the Death Eaters (and I believe some of the Order, but I can't quite remember) fly. They just become the smokey version of themselves and fly around. I have no idea why they felt the need to insert this.
They also changed the look of the dementor's from PoA. How they looked
didn't bother me, it was the fact that they changed the look. It's one
thing to give some of the character's hair cuts, it's another to change the
entire look of a character. It can only serve to confuse people.
A few of the moments in the 3-D section were cool, but for the most part, I could've done without it.
Despite what may sound like a lot of criticism, I really did enjoy this
film. They way it was condenced really impressed me and it was a lot of
fun. |
