No , I don't think so .

She guarded it because someone put the portrait in front of the entrance of Gryffindor tower . She could run away if she likes , and the they would place it with another painting .
This happend in the PoA , remember Sir Cadogan ?

It was supposed to be funny, but it all these nameless portraits and ghosts also kept us from guessing that the Gray Lady was important.

She is just a painting that JKR wanted to guard....probably also for her personality.....to make sure that if students didn't know the password they would have to listen to her hard-to-bear singing,lol!
