I think that Dumbledore knew that there was a possibility of death, but not that he would positively die

dumbledore told snape to kill him, that's why they were arguing like hagrid said, about it being too hard for snape. snape's going to have to convince everyone in the next book that he's innocent.

He knew he was going to die - because it was planned that he would "die."

JK has stated in sites that & I quote "Don't expect Dumbledore to pull a Gandalf. Dumbledore IS really dead. Everyone needs to move through the five stages of grief and get past his death."

NOW I think the reason she says this is so we will believe that he is dead and when he is mentioned again in the last book people would say "Hey but I thought you said he was dead" Kind of saying it so as not to ruin our surprise when he is in the last book.
