Default Sorting in Second Year

I think they should add a First Year Dormitory and leave sorting until the end of term or at the beginning of second year. I think beginning of second year would be better, but the first years should be more restricted from associating with the 3rd-7th years due to deeper rooted rivalries. Wouldn't want to expose them to this animosity between houses.

This arrangement would prevent 1st years from participating in Quidditch, but balancing sports and schoolwork is more difficult at a young age, so all the better.

The first years learn their strengths in magic, then get sorted into their respective houses.

What do you think? What are some of the benefits? What would be wrong about this arrangement?

Nothing.
But in the real world, I would ask why they need to sort at all.
I can see splitting the students into smaller, multi-aged groups, but they would do better to do it at random.

How do you think Harry's first year would have been different (mainly concerning the people in the same year)? Would he have made friends with someone other than Hermione and Neville, or would the qualities that make a Gryff, a Gryff, and a Puff, a Puff bring these students together naturally?

ok first problem its like making a freshmen even more different than they already ae it is good to sort at young age because they will be around people they like because in reality they go to the house they want if they really want to be in that house so whats the point just because dumbledore said does mean its a good idea look what happened to him maybe he should have been slytherine because as we saw he wanted power and was very ambitous (what house was dumbledore in)

I see your point, but perhaps some of these students would befriend each other and get sorted into different houses...thus creating more inter-house friendships...maybe even between Gryffindor and Slytherin. There will always be those who will know which house they belong to due to family trends and gravitate towards others who already know as well (children of death eaters for instance).

It would be better to delay sorting, but not to do away with it entirely.

I think the purpose of splitting students into 'houses' helps to create comaraderie and the concept of working together for a greater good.
It teaches lessons that winning is not everything (only one house can win), while the Slytherin's take the 'us vs them' concept to extremes (preferring pure bloods)... it helps people to get together when previously they would have had nothing else in common.

If Hermione had gone to Ravenclaw - I don't think she would have befriended Harry & Ron. Given their first year reactions to her braininess.... I don't think they would have bonded at all.

in Australia we had 'houses' red, green, blue and gold - and we had house captains as well as a school captain. Perhaps it's a british educational custom that we Aussies had picked up. I don't know that the US have 'houses' as such. If I'm mistaken here - please correct me. Always happy to learn.

They may have the chance of making friends with more different people , but I don't think there will be a lot of differences if they sort the students in their second year .
A 11-year-old child doesn't change his personality acutely , does he ?

ok in america we dont have houses and there are no real benefites of sorting one yeasr later so sorting right away is good because they already have more comradarie because they arwe in a house

In NZ we have school houses. Remember ... Hogwarts is a boarding school and the role of your house is also your family ... for your entire school life. In that respect I think you have to sort on day 1 . Unlike real families ... you get placed into an environment where your natural inner qualities match other people similar to you. It might be odd at first ... look at Neville from book 1 to book 7, but it's magic and seems to work.

Everyone, I think has shades of light and dark ... so, most people could go to any house. But in the end, I think it's your strongest tendencies that are revealed on the first day before any influence has changed the real you.

But, that's my opinion.
