Ok Zonko 'm old love 'm old mate, I've reread the Lost Prophecy chapter (p723- 744) and, I'm probably MsThicko but, sorry I can not find anything that says Dumbledore did the protection spell that saved Harry's life against Voldemort. I still reckon it was all Lily. Page 736 (in the AUSTRALIAN (not British) hardback ed. says: And so I made my decision. You would be protected by an ancient magic of which he knows, which he despises, and which he has always, therefore, underestimated- to his cost. I am speaking, of course, of the fact that your mother died to save you. She gave you a lingering protection he never expected, a protection that flows in your veins to this day. I put my trust, therefore, in your mother's blood. I delivered you to her sister.... When D says "I made my decision" it was about where to put Harry not what spell/ charm (what IS the difference 'tween a spell and charm?) to use to save him against V. 'Cause, Lily had already done the saving not D. Additionally, D above, says he gave you lingering protection" not "I channelled your mother's love and I gave you lingering protection" It was Lily I think.What are you reading that's different? What do you think? Have I misunderstood what you're saying 'cause I just don't get it.

Buffy: Read the following paragraph about Harry's aunt: "She took you...and in doing so she sealed the charm I placed upon you." As I interpret it, Lily gave Harry protection. Dumbledore sealed the protection around Harry so that he was no longer vulnerable as long as he stayed with Aunt Petunia. Charms protect. Enchantments create illusion. Spells alter the state of things but are generally temporary. Hexes and curses are long-lasting evil altered states. For lack of better information, this explanation works for me. I've not read the Hogwarts school books but perhaps definitions of magical terms are included. As to the number of pages, the USA Order of Phoenix has 870 pages. Larger print and more spacing between lines could certainly account for that. The book is published by Scholastic Press Inc. here in the USA which means they can fatten up the book without worrying about shipping costs. I am assuming that your book was published in London and shipped Down Under. An extra 100 pages each book while not costly to print, would be costly to ship. It's all about The Bottom Line.

Zonko: Thanks 'm old cobber. I've come over all 'Ozie'/ patriotic-like 'cause, gotta tell ya, we have got printing presses in Australia. Might shock you but there we go. Probably forged from our convict chains (can't think of a better use for them...That's quite deep!! Well if it was true). The Australian ed. of OotP has 766 pages, was printed in Aus BUT typeset in Br.. Maybe this means it is identical to the Br. version. Don't know. Shipping costs not an issue. Love your definitions of charms etc. Thankyou Get your point about Dumbledore's role. I suppose my qualm is the emphasis on D's role rather than Lily's. I'm being totally pedantic(sp) but I prefer to think of D as 'extending' the brillance of Lily rather than 'completing' it or D being solely responsible (I was getting the vibe that you were pointing towards the latter). Do you see the distinction? Still reckon blood (not 'love' or 'relatives'; the red, sticky stuff) and the fact that Voldemorts got some of Harry's is going to play a role. What about JKR saying that Dumbledore and PETUNIA communicated before the night D left Harry on the step at Privett Dr.. What's that about?

Buffy: No kidding. You have printing presses, paper and ink in Australia. Wicked! I don't know how things are Down Under. Me old pal from Sydney claimed that things were expensive because everything had to be shipped in. That was his big complaint. Yet it cost a ton for me to fly down there and I didn't have the money at the time. So he flew to the States. Go figure. Oh no, I've always believed that the important part of Harry's protection came from Lily Potter. Dumbledore just buttoned it down so to speak. Had Lily lived, she could have done it all. Dumbledore could NEVER have done it all. So what could have possessed Petunia to take baby Harry? She could have been kind (NOT). She could have loved her sister (NOT). She could have been greedy (MAYBE). Or she could have been scared (PERHAPS). I think that Dumbledore arranged to pay Petunia in Muggle money to take Harry. The deal is that if she reneges on her promise, she must return the money. That's why Petunia and Vernon live a relatively upscale existance. I also believe that Petunia's cleaning fetish is the result of her sister's association with the magical world--her family's dirty secret. Petunia took the money from Dumbledore and has been trying to wash away the shame ever since.

Zonko: Yeah, well I wouldn't believe everything Ausies say (except me); crying poor comes from being treated like country cousins for centuries, that and our convict blood makes us liars - I mean, that goes without saying :P -makes us good swimmers and jugglers too but not quite sure how - DNA's a funny thing. Since posting my last^, I read something that you wrote somewhere that made it clear that Dumb.'s protection of Harry only happened after Lily's protection charm on him. I'm not putting this well 'cause I'm brain be-fuddled with tirednessness. Anyway I think I understand- might not, we'll see. I'm dying here..must go to bed. Dumb. gave Petunia money?...naaaa<-----Sorry, bit late in the a.m. for diplomacy. Dumb. wrote to warn Petunia about Voldemort? no. Why would V. be interested in the nastiest muggles? Why then?

Nighty night Buffster! Sleep tight. I think that phrase refers to sailors who used to sleep in hammocks in the bowels of the ship. When the weather was rough, they would have to tie themselves in to avoid getting dumped out on the floor in the middle of the night. Tight can also mean stingy as in "he's so tight when he squeaks. And finally tight also means drunk. I am reminded of a parody that goes: Tiger, tiger burning bright, Are you loose? (escaped from the zoo) Or am I tight?" (drunk) I heard that when I was a kid. It took me years to figure it out.

Buffy: Okay so maybe Dumbledore didn't give Petunia money to take baby Harry but maybe he scared her into it. How 'bout this: Petunia actually has some magical ability and she is scared to death that Vernon or her neighbors will find out. Dumbledore has threatened to tell on her if she doesn't agree to take Harry? Whaddya think? Hah! If not, please tell me why you think Petunia agreed to take Harry. (grin)

Zonko 'm darlin (sorry that was a smidgen personal wasn't it? I'm running out of colloquils!!!) Poor old sailors. Imagine having to go to sleep in the bowels of anything?! Never heard your 'pretty', kiddie ditty before. Very clever Did you know that 'Goosey Goosey gander where do I wander, Up stairs, downstairs in my ladies chamber.....' was supposed to be about a certain area in olde London that was owned by the Catholic church and was where prostitutes plyed their trade. The rhyme's evidently criticising the Church's hypocracy for taking rent from these women. JKR was asked about our Peti. and said "No. Petunia is all muggle"/ no magic in her bod. thankyou very much! I can only imagine that D. was writing to Peti in the past to keep her up to date on the goings on/ potential threat to the Potters or potential threat to the Dursleys- this is REALLY weak I know. D. and Peti. must have had an affair....it is the ONLY logical conclusion. All my theories seem to end up with this conclusion... Wonder what that's about.

Buffy: You mentioned being dead tired, sitting at your computer, I felt sorry for you. I've been there; done that. The motor was running; I wanted to keep typing but the light was fading SLOW-LY. I can sometimes make it to 4:00 am but I am SO sorry the next day. Anyway, my intention was to give you a spontaneous burst of sympathy and a kindly send off. How did I do? Goosey goosey gander whether shall I wander; Upstairs downstairs in my lady's chamber; There I met an old man who would not say his prayers; I took him by the left leg and threw him down the stairs. Well how 'bout that. The rhyme never made sense to me. Now it does. Thank you. Hah! I think Dumbledore has scared old Petunia right and proper. I'm not certain how. But his most recent message to her was REMEMBER MY LAST... How would you complete that sentence? I would add the word WARNING. Why do you think Petunia agreed to take the magical brat? Why take the kid and treat him like a dog with fleas? Why?
| |||
Sorry to bring out the big guns again but JKR said 'Remember my last' referred to a letter (not a threat) and that the 'last' letter was the one on Harry on the doorstep as a baby. She goes on to say that this means that our Petunia poppit and Dumb. had obviously communicated before then; Dumb. had written letters before....(I know you know all this I'm just trying to get it stright in my head before.... WHOSH ...some spark of brillance and creativity sends me hurtling into outta space, past the planet of 'maybe..' and 'probably' and towards the planet of 'Yeah that's it!'..... Huston we have a problem). I don't know why Petunia HAD to take Harry and/or why she HAS to keep him. I have a feeling that that letter is still around and we too will get to read in the next two books (better, 'cause we won't get a chance afterwards); it will play a part -7th rather than 6th I reckon. In order to keep the thoughts a'flowin: Petunia HAD to take Harry in 'cause she/her blood/ her will is tied to the protective spell- she has no choice - spell stronger than her will. Not the best but I'll think on that after I've got my brillant: Lupin is a Deatheater theory spelt out. K?
