Why wasn't Hermione in Ravenclaw if she's so clever. And why isn't Neville in Hufflepuff? He's not exactly brilliant.

Good question. Of all the attributes that Hogwarts prizes, bravery is considered the most important. So anyone who is brave will be placed in Gryffindor no matter what other talents they possess, or DON"T possess. The Sorting Hat's song lyrics tell us this. However, that also brings us to Cedric Diggory who was both gallant and brave. Why wasn't he in Gryffindor? For that I have no answer. Anybody else have a different take on this?

bravery takes many forms. neville can be brave in that his parents were driven mad by voldemort he was brave to pull through that. and although herminoe is brilliant she is also very brave standing up for he friends in every way and perhaps the sorting hat know what is is stoered for them

That's true. We really don't know what The Sorting Hat sees in each student. I still think it's curious that Cedric didn't end up in Gryffindor.

When Cedric was pulled from the Goblet of Fire, he was already toast. In order to be sorted, all students must be alive. Must be a rule. Anyway, I realized that when Cedric was down in the lake, it didn't occur to him to save everyone. He was only interested in winning. Harry on the other hand felt responsible for all the water hostages. So Cedric wasn't cut from the same cloth as Harry although I thinnk time would have made him a more compassionate person.
