Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff are not well represented in Books 1-5. We don't know much about them or their members. It would help if JKR would give us a little insight. I know I'm a Ravenclaw and I have an irrepressable sense of humour!

I think that the whole purpose of not shedding alot of light on the other houses aside from Griffindor is because Griffindor is a house of ...bravery...right? and throughout the books bravery by the griffindors , harry ron and herrmionie have been the main focus and and attraction, the only times that the other houses get attention is probably in some class where a ravenclaw or hufflepuff student might be recognized for their cleverness or slitherin student for doing something evil (or is considered evil by the majority) . So there is not a real cause or purpose to shed light on any house but the one of the main charcters aside from those circumstances that i mentioned. *** However i think if something big happens in/ involving one of the other houses they might even take the light away from Griffindor.

It actually makes sense that Gryffindor is the stand out house because the Sorting Hat says in one of its songs that of all the attributes, bravery is the most prized. Those of us in Ravenclaw would say, "Discretion is the better part of valor," meaning that if you use your brains first, all that black & blue bravery may not be necessary after all. Point.

well said miecha. The particular attributes of the four houses are meant to equal one, well rounded individual: Hogwarts. Unfortunately, these attributes aren't just the personality traits of one individual, they are the preferences of the people in the houses; so not so united more warring! This brings to mind another question: Why is the Sorting Hat necessary if it's up to the preference of the individual student, which house they want to be in? Why can't choosing a house be more like choosing a university. You go on a tour, check out the pros and cons and decide. Additionally, if the four houses are supposed to equal one united school, why all the secrecy about where the different houses' dorm.s are and all the competion between them ? I mean a bit of 'reward and punishment' discipline is a common classroom management strategy but when and where is the Hogwarts' spirit encouraged not just interhouse competition? This policy and secrecy seems determined to divide the school rather than unite it.
