Do you remmember what happened after September 11th ?
That was a total chaos at the US !! You couldn't even speak about Bin Laden or Bush because people could accuse you of being a spy, a terrorist or whatever !!! everybody was so afraid they were paranoid and I think that's the same on the books. When everybody is so afraid you can not speak about the thinks openly.[/b]
Well, not exactly.
I was at the dentist that morning (near Overlook Hospital) where
one can clearly see the New York skyline from across the river.
And the huge column of smoke on that morning.
My brother-in-law was on the 25th floor.
He and most of his friends got out.
The friend who did not get out became the father of twins five days later.

So, anyway,
No, it was not like that at all.
I don't know anyone who was afraid to say Bin Laden's name.
Those of us who hate Bush shut our mouths for a while, partly out
of respect for those who lost so much, partly out of confusion and anger.
Yes, I admit it. For a while, I was as big a jerk as Bush, and wanted to hurt somebody.
Fear? Ok, maybe a little fear of flying or fear of the stock market.
Other than that, fear was never a real issue.
Just a blind rage. Blind enough to be happily lead into a stupid, pointless war by a complete idiot.

No, the analogy doesn't work for Voldemort.
I always figured it was just a fiction thing.
It's like StarTrek -- When the plot's a little weak, you just look the other way.
A true Trekie can forgive just about anything.

I gather you're not a StarTrek fan.

The subtle inconsistancies,
the just plain stupid blunders, big and small...
We forgive and forgive because we love StarTrek, warts & all.

Starting with the "whoooosh!" sound in the original theme song
(deep space is a vacuum, where such a sound is not possible)
and continuing forever.

"ginevra26" compared September 11th
to the fear of saying anything but "He Who Must Not Be Named."

I compared it to StarTrek. I say it's just silliness, but chose to look the other way.
I forgive because the rest of the series more than makes up for it.

Does that make sense yet?

No, "forgive" is the wrong word.
It's an endearing flaw.
Both of them.
The "whoooosh!" sound in the StarTrek theme song
and the "He Who Must Not Be Named" nonsence in Harry Potter.
Like a beauty mark, some little flaws just make a person more lovable.

Ahhh I think I get it. Like the 'Inca Mummy Girl' episode in season one of Buffy the Vampire Slayer which was a turd that sunk in the fertile brillance that surrounds it/ one dud idea in genius???

Are you suggesting that our Jo's genius is flawed?? Surely not!! There is no oversight here! Voldemort can not be named by the general public in order to build and add to the drama and sense of impending doom. When this happens -just like in the idea/l of Bin Laden- it doesn't matter what this person does or doesn't do. A feeling of terror is envoked by the hushed way by which they are referred to. That terror is greater than any threat that person could ever create by their deeds alone. Therefore, no flaw of Jo, just genius. Typical

i think the whole "dont say his name!!!" thing is all about fear--- like i have a fear of mice/rats, spiders, and snakes (i know the traditional "girl fear" things) and i get the heebie-jeebies when people talk about them. It might be kinda like that if you dont talk about it directly it doesnt seem so bad. I dont know-- just a theory!!

PS i am not as much of a wimp as i seemed up above (i hope) lol

Ooohh! Star Trek! Good analogy!

And you probably aren't as much of a wimp as you lead us to believe, HPLuver, some of those fears might even be rational for you.

*shakes head* I still think that the whole not saying his name thing is dumb, and maybe no one (not even JK herself) can explain the reason for it.

They Simply dont say the name because they are afraid of him. Which dosent make sense since they all know who they are talking about when someone says you know who

I can remember watching 9/11 on the news. I was only about 11 and when I saw all the Muslims celebrating I started crying. I couldn't believe someone could celebrate the death of so many innocent people. I bet it was well scary for people who lived nearby.
As for the You Know Who obsession, I think we'd need to get Jo to clarify that for us, but I reckon it's the theory Ginevra26 mentiond.

Like I said, I do live nearby.
I was close enough to see the smoke.
If I knew when to look, I could have stepped outside and watched them crumble.
I've never been afraid to say Bin Laden's name.
This fear of a name just makes no sense in the modern world.
It's just not something intellegent people would do.
