I know it is long but this was so interesting. Petunia's Future Role
Harry’s aunt has always been one of the most hated, yet most intriguing characters of the series. Her past is shrouded in mystery, and her present-self is usually a nosy old woman who only cares for herself and her son. She’s constantly giving Harry a hard time, never letting him live a day of his life without letting him know how much trouble he is. If magic is near, Petunia isn’t. We are led on to believe from day one that Petunia is one who hates and despises anything that has to do with magic (even her own nephew and sister). Then we read Order of the Phoenix.
Petunia’s history begins to change when Harry comes home from a bout with Dudley and the Dementors. The explanation they ask of him is a little less threatening than the murder he expected, but with that explanation we get one of the biggest shocks of the series. While Harry is being pelted with questions by Vernon, the reader, and the characters are shocked to here Petunia’s answer to one of Vernon‘s questions about Dementors: "They guard the wizard prison, Azkaban." While this surprised everyone, a more shocking revelation was just around the corner. As Harry goes on to tell the Dursleys that Voldemort has returned, we are able to look at Petunia in a way we have never been able to visualize before. Petunia gasps and there is a look of fear and terror in her eyes. And at this moment Harry fully appreciated Petunia, and considers her his mothers sister. Genius, it shows us that even the most terrible of people may have some hope inside. Petunia realizes the impact of what has happened, is reminded of the horrible end her sister went through, and notices there is trouble coming. For the first time Petunia is human, not some vicious animal without a care in the world. This sets it up so we can finally appreciate Petunia for who she really is, Lily’s sister, and even though very little is revealed, we are left in great anticipation as to what’s to come.
"The furious pretense that Aunt Petunia had maintained all Harry’s life- that there was no magic and no world other than the world she inhabited with Uncle Vernon- seemed to have fallen away." This brings us to the whole point of the article, what’s in store for Petunia. What we do know is that Harry is safe with her because his mother’s blood run’s in her veins. This means Petunia, like it or not, carries some magic along with her all the time. But is she truly magical, is she the "person who will develop magic later in life?" Before this argument could be presented one point must be made, Petunia is not a squib. According to Rowling, a squib is a person who is born from a magical family but lacks magical powers. Petunia’s parents were both muggles. But going back to the point, all the signs point to Petunia developing some form of magic sometime in the future. The description of Petunia’s horror after finding out that Voldemort returned is key to finding out what will happen to Petunia. For one of the first times ever, she feels Harry’s pain. I think she finally realizes that her sister was murdered, and the person who murdered her is back. All of this sets up a future, almost a destiny, for Petunia. I think in Book 6 and 7 we will see Petunia realizing her magical ability, which will probably show up at a time where her or the family (even Harry), is in great danger or need. I have no doubt that when it comes to the final fight between Harry and Voldemort, that she will play a key part in helping Harry to come out successful. She is after all Lily’s sister, the closest thing Harry has to a biological mother. With Petunia witnessing first-hand in future books the death and destruction Voldemort causes, I truly believe she will make amends with her total dislike for magic, and realize her sister for what she really was: a hero. She will probably want to make it up to her sister some how, and it is my belief that there will be some sacrifice on her part in order to get Harry out of trouble.
Even if Petunia does not develop true magic (like waving wands and making potions), Petunia helping out would indeed be magical, especially if she makes a sacrifice for Harry like her sister did. But even if none of this is the case, something special is in store for Petunia, and she will play a big role into the future books. I want this article to make everyone think and formulate their own ideas about Harry’s aunt. I’m also interested in hearing everyone else’s theories on the future of Petunia, and will write an article incorporating those and how possible they are of coming true. What will come will come, and we’ll never know until it does, but one thing we do know about Petunia is that she has a colorful future in store for her and hopefully a heroic one: because she is indeed, as Harry said, truly his mother’s sister. |
