Default The Malfoy Family: Could They have Been Any Different?

The Malfoy family was a perfect family to play off the Weasleys. Both Purebloods but each family took a different road. While the Malfoys were snobs, the Weasleys were open and friendly. The Malfoys were rich and powerful while the Weasleys were poor and not so powerful. Total opposites but both essential to the storyline. I feel much more sorrow for the Malfoys. They had it all and missed out on so much joy. But for some reason I really like the Malfoys. Perhaps because of Narcissa loving her son so much. But do you think they really changed at the end of book seven?

Cool video link!!!

Now, did The Malfoy's change in the end?

Yes & No......

I still beleive that they will remain as pompous as ever, thinking that they as purebloods are 1st class in the wizarding world.

However, after the torment & torture Voldemort put their family through, I do think they'll have retired their death eater ways.

As for The Weasley's, I think the Malfoy's would still regard them as unworthy. These are two families that will never get together for tea....

As far as who was more important to the storyline- the Weasley's were probably more important, even if one just measures in the amount of time/pages the Weasleys are mentioned in comparison to the Malfoys in the books.
On the other hand, I think the Malfoys could have been very different- for both better and worse- than JKR ended up making them in DH.

The Importance of the Malfoy Family equals the Weasleys.

What Plot can there be without the 'bad guys'?

Good question.

Well, the diffrentiation I make is that while I can imagine the DE/Voldemort without the Malfoys (the neccessary antagonists) I cannot imagine the Order/DA without the Weasleys (the neccessary protagonists). Or, to put it in another way- the Weasleys are epitomize the idea of "with Harry" while the Malfoys don't definitely epitomize the idea of "against Harry"- Voldemort and Bellatrix do.

If the Malfoy's were any different the story wouldn't be what it is! I think that they create a balance with all the good that, for example, the Weasley's family shows...

Did the Malfoys change in the end?
I don't think so, exactly.

I think their ordeal with Voldemort brought out a side of them that we would not have otherwise seen.

Narcissa, obviously. From the beginning of DH, she was a traitor to Voldemort, because he betrayed her and obviously intended to kill her son. And in the end, she lied that Harry was dead. Why she did this has been debated, but I don't believe that it was entirely self-serving. It would have been the right thing to do, whether or not her family would directly benefit from it. (Remember that she was not truly a Death Eater. She was connected by her husband and sister, but not in her own right.)

But even before that, back in OoP, I think Lucius himself showed some restraint. I think that his feelings were mixed even then, and that his heart wasn't really in it any more. Or that, had he fully realized just what he was getting into, he wouldn't have gone that way in the first place.

He would still be a prat. His values don't work for me. But I doubt that he was ever pure evil.

I vote equal..... I really can't imagine the story without the Malfoys... Nor can I imagine the story without the Weaselys. I'm going to quote Browny here...

"I still beleive that they will remain as pompous as ever, thinking that they as purebloods are 1st class in the wizarding world.

However, after the torment & torture Voldemort put their family through, I do think they'll have retired their death eater ways.

I agree with that

I picked the Weasleys. No matter what, you couldn't do without Ron, Ginny, Mrs.Weasley... but JKR could have left out the Malfoys and the books, I think, would barely be affected. Make one of the other Slytherins his enemy... have someone else lie to Voldemort... take the trio somewhere else when they were caught by Snatchers.
Honestly, the books would be another story without the Weasleys, but the Malfoys weren't very important.

Perfect evil is impossible. There would be no family.

Take Aunt Bella (please). Pure evil. Even if she could, by some means I can’t imagine, manage to produce a son, he would have been separated from his mother by Azkaban when he was a baby. Send him to someone equally evil? No such person would take him. Give him to someone as mean as the Dursleys? Then we would have to feel sorry for him. Send him to someone partially evil, but a decent mother? That’s Narcissa. Now we have the Draco twins.

Later, when Momma busts out of Azkaban, she still couldn’t have reclaimed custody of the kid (not that she would want to) because she was on the run.

No matter how you worked it out, you couldn’t have a family that is more evil than the Malfoys and still be a credible family.
