think about it...

when harry's parents were killed...they were 21...and they had both already defied Voldemort 3 times.

that would mean that they were possibly defying voldemort while still at hogwarts. just like harry!

I just have one question... I think (THINK!) JKR said that they defied Voldemort by refusing to join him... but Lily was Muggle born... so why would he try to get her to join?

perhaps voldemort wanted her because of Snape...maybe. He might have hated muggle borns but he would have spared her for Snape. He might have let her join. but it might also be that when James defied him that it counted as her own. Because they were married?

Maybe he went after them because they were in the Order of the Phoenix. Wasnt Voldemort & his followers hunting down all Order members...

Well, they were 21 when Voldemort attacked...but if they were 18 when they got out of school they did have three years inbetween... so it's likely they defied Voldemort approx. once a year, which means that they didn't necessarily defy Voldemort during their school years as Harry did...
...I always felt as though it was implied that Marauders/Lily were not greatly involved while at Hogwarts, but I think it's reasonable to assume they could ahve joined the Order almost right after graduating and that their defiances of Voldemort would have been related to Order work.

As far as Lily, she was probably more of a target as a Muggleborn and Order member than as a possible recruit.
