Default Is Harry Potter too easy for kids to read in school?

Your answer probably depends on the age and skill level of the child. I hope kids try to read both Harry Potter and Anna Karenina, not chose between them!

When Harry Potter replaced Anna

Hello kids! You want a story? Do you want me to read it for you? Great, kids. Take your pacifiers out of your mouths and come sit on my lap. How old did you say you are? 14? You’re such big kids! What, you’re in junior high already? You’re not even kids?

Doesn’t matter. The Israeli Education Ministry thinks that it would be best for you if we read you a story in class – something easy, you know, Harry Potter, The Princess Diaries, stuff like that. In the next stage, I assume, immediately after the reading session, the ministry would recommend to breastfeed you, change your diaper, and proceed with your afternoon nap.

Well, compared to Tolstoy, HP would be a walk in the park. BUT as the article pointed out, it's not just HP that is being offered as lit in the schools, but the Princess Diaries - wonder what else.

At our HS, the kids are still required to read the classics (and some newer works that are equally difficult), much to their chagrin. When they pick a book for a book report, it's usually something lighter. I'd hate to think about a life without the folks from the classics. I don't remember Jack London being particularly difficult reading. It's the middle of the night. I'm sure there were others.

No one that I know ever claimed HP was difficult reading.

I had the first three books read by second grade. I read the rest as they came out.
Of course, I'm the most advanced reader in my whole grade. According to diagnostic tests, I'm qualified to read what a college freshman should be able to read...
Some kids in my class only read the HP books in the past two years.
Some kids in my class just put on this totally ignorant face and go, "It's too thick!"
And I know for a fact a freshman English class was reading SS this year.
This help?

I have a cousin that read the first book when he was six. But he had been reading since he was three so I guess he was a bit advanced. He is 12 now and a freshman in high school. I expect to pass him in a hallway here any day.
