Snape wasn't charged as a Death Eater coz he was under the Impeius Curse.

That would explain why Dumbledopre trusts him...

But it doesn't explain why he was shunned as DADA teacher so many times

I doubt it. I would think that such a good occlumens (sp?) would also have the mental strength to resist the Imperius curse. Also, I don't think that's a good enough reason to trust him. I think Snape would have had to have DONE something to show where his loyalty lay.

Maybe he made an unbreakable vow of some sort to Dumbledore.

That will probably be what it says in book 7. So...very very realistic.

Mmm...Remeber in the Half Blood Prince, Dumbledore said why he had trusted Snape....

"He said he was sorry that he had ever done it, and I beleive it was the greatest regret in his life"

Well obliviously it was'nt, mmm. This is tough. Maybe in his trial he did occlumensy and said everything that the trial was wanting him to say. Or maybe he got the panel Imperiused. Anythings possible!

By that, do you mean that he ratted out the others? I don't think so. Karkaroff did it, and he wasn't too popular afterward. I don't believe Snape did that. Whatever it is, I think it's something private, between just Snape and Dumbledore. Something no one else knows.

I agree. Because obviously no one else at Hogwarts knows what it is.

I agree with Psyduck. I think its something between just him and Dumbledore. But I have no idea what it could be.

Well, the most obvious answer would be another unbreakable vow, but I'm not sure that I believe Rowling would use the same device twice. Dumbledor says that it was the biggest regret of Snape's life, but that tells us nothing about what he did to redeem himself. In order for Snape to have received the position he held at Hogwarts you can bet Dumbledor would have needed something significant as proof when he recanted. It will be interesting to see what it was, because I have no clue at the moment.
